Arne Nordheim (born 1931) has a unique position in Norwegian contemporary music and he is internationally recognized. A number of Nordheim's works are thus composed of foreign artists and institutions, "Eco" for solo, choir and orchestra was written for the Swedish Radio, the orchestral work "greening" was a commission from the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, while the cello concerto "Tenebrae" was composed at the request of master cellist Mstislav Rostropovich.

Nordheim has been called the great renewer of Norwegian music after the Second World War. He took an early use of electronic techniques in his compositions, but his complex musical language never became an mission in itself. He is very interested in the music's emotional qualities, and has described himself as "a real old-fashioned landscape composer." "Everything shall sing" is a characteristic quote of Nordheim.

In 1972 Nordheim won The Nordic Council Music Prize for "Eco", and in 1981 he won the Prix Italia with the radiofonic composition "Descent".
